THE FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND CARICATURE IN TURKEY AS A COMPARISON TO EUROPE
Date: 14.05.2015
Venue: Founders Hall, Koç University The paper was presented at the 4th International Students' Symposium on Law and Global Issues in Koç University. |
Abstract of the paper presented at the symposium:
"The freedom of expression is a widely-accepted concept that is guaranteed under various international legal documents, as well as included in the Turkish Constitution and laws in Turkey. Caricature, which is one of the most significant manifestations of the freedom of expression, has been a weapon for the cartoonists in their challenge against the political powers. Therefore, the freedom of expression is ensured under constitutions notwithstanding, the political powers tried to suppress this weapon used by cartoonists for the continuation of their authority and reign, and did not tolerate the criticism of their imperfections." |

VOLUNTARY PROJECTS
stART (2015-present)
We are developing a social entrepreneurship project in Istanbul with KUGlobalAid for the advancement of Syrian refugee children's psychological health by using art therapy, and an illustrated story book of which the illustrations are drawn by me.
Our story book was also translated into Arabic language and comprises motifs and symbols that are familiar to Syrian refugee children. We believe that it will facilitate the children's challenge in overcoming PTSD and other trauma-related problems. |

ENKA - ZIS COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT (2010)
Paint, brush, walls, and a village school! This was the first voluntary experience in my life. We were 8 students from AdapazariıEnka High School, and other 5 students were from our sister school, Zurich International School (ZIS): 13 students who aimed to promote solidarity and cooperation conducted a community service project in Sakarya Koprubasi Primary School. All of us undertook different roles: some of us painted the outdoor walls, some carried school equipment... That is one of the reasons how my awareness in social inequalities and human rights issues has been sparked! |
